Program Description

This program offers financial assistance to Mom & Pop, Small Businesses (ten employees or fewer) and Nonprofit Organizations to support capacity building. The goal is to strengthen operations and stimulate increased business activity, including growth in sales and revenue.

Maximum Grant Amount: $5,000.

Definitions:

  • Small Business -- an independently owned and operated company with ten or fewer employees.
  • Nonprofit Organization -- an entity organized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service tax code, created to serve a public, charitable, educational, or community purpose.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The organization must operate within the City of Miramar (e.g. commercial location or home-based).
  • Both for-profit and nonprofit organizations are eligible.
  • The organization must have been in operation for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • The organization must possess a City of Miramar Business Tax Receipt (and Broward County, if applicable)
  • The organization must have an active sunbiz registration that shows current business name. 
  • If a property owner, must be up to date in property taxes.

Additional Requirements

  • The City may request a meeting to assess organization needs and ensure appropriate use of grant funds.
  • The City may require proof or assurance that the funds allocated were used for the purposes stated in the application. If the funds are determined to have been used outside of the scope of requested usage, the city will reserve the right to request the funds be reimbursed.
  • The City may require additional information as needed to determine application eligibility and reserves the right to accept, reject any and all applications.

All organizations applying for funding should attend the grant workshop to learn about the program requirements. All questions will be answered only during this time. Attending the workshop does not guarantee your business will receive funding. 

Please be on time and review the application beforehand. We recommend you do not complete the application before attending the workshop.

Eligible Uses of Funds (Grant funds may be requested for eligible expenses)

  • Purchase of machinery and/or equipment
  • Professional services (e.g., legal, accounting, marketing)
  • Supplies/Inventory
  • Technology infrastructure and system upgrades
  • Commercial lease and rental deposits
  • Select Miscellaneous business expense(s)       

Ineligible Uses of Funding 

  • Purchase of alcohol, tobacco, medicine or other controlled substances, paraphernalia, and weapons
  • Property Taxes
  • Business Debts
  • Outstanding commercial lease payments
  • Appropriate government fees, licenses and permits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much funding can I receive? Eligible applicants may receive up to $5,000 per approved application, subject to the availability of grant funds. You may not receive the full amount requested.
  2. Do I have to attend the grant workshop? Attendance is strongly encouraged because City staff will review the program requirements and answer applicant questions. However, attending the workshop does not guarantee funding.
  3. Do I need to have a Miramar Business Tax Receipt or can I use the Broward County Tax Receipt? All applicants must have a Miramar Business Tax Receipt to be eligible. 
  4. Can home-based businesses apply? Yes. Home-based businesses located within the City of Miramar are eligible, provided they meet all program requirements.
  5. Can previous City of Miramar grant recipients apply? Yes. Previous recipients may apply but must disclose prior City grant funding, including the year(s) received and the City grant program.
  6. What happens after I receive the grant? Grant recipients may be asked to provide receipts, invoices, or other documentation to verify that grant funds were used as approved. The City may also request a meeting or site visit. If funds are used for unapproved purposes, repayment may be required.
  7. How can I submit my application?Completed application packages may be submitted online (if available), or hand delivered in a sealed envelope to the Economic Development & Housing Department at the Development Services Building.
  8. What documents are required with my application? Applicants must submit:
    A completed application
    Proof the business or nonprofit has operated for at least one year
    Current City of Miramar Business Tax Receipt
    Active Sunbiz registration (or IRS determination letter for nonprofits) FEIN documentation (if applicable)
    Valid government-issued photo ID of the owner or nonprofit director
    Photo of the business location
    Professional license, if required
    Any required conflict-of-interest approvals
  9. What if my business requires a professional license?If your business or organization operates in a licensed profession or regulated industry, you must include a copy of your current State of Florida professional license with your application.
  10. What employees count toward the 10-employee limit? Only W-2 employees count toward the 10-employee maximum. Independent contractors (1099 workers) are not included. Each employee counts as one employee, regardless of whether they are full-time or part-time.
  11. Is funding guaranteed if I qualify? No. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding. Applications are reviewed based on eligibility, completeness, and available funding. The City reserves the right to request additional information and to approve or deny any application.
