On August 21, 2024, Belize City and the City of Miramar, Florida, officially formalized their 13-year friendship by signing a Sister City Agreement at Miramar’s Town Center/City Hall. The event was attended by dignitaries including Mayor Bernard Wagner, Councilors Stephanne Hamilton and Eluide Miller, Mayor Wayne Messam, Miramar city officials, Ambassador Sandhya Murphy, and members of the Belizean diaspora. Representatives from Sister Cities International were also present.
Mayor Messam highlighted opportunities for collaboration in areas such as economic development, technology, and tourism, noting Miramar’s thriving business environment and institutions like FIU. Mayor Wagner praised Miramar as a guiding example for Belize City’s growth.
The ceremony featured the symbolic presentation of the keys to the city from Mayor Messam to Mayor Wagner, underscoring the strong bond between the two communities. Both cities expressed optimism about the future of this partnership and gratitude to all who made it possible.
